Welcome!
Welcome! Chances are good you found this blog by searching for something about fraternities or sororities.
I was the last person anyone would have suspected of joining a sorority in college. I am sure I would have agreed with them, too.
When I made my way to Syracuse University, I saw the houses with the Greek letters that edged Walnut Park, and wished I could tour them. My roommate suggested I sign up for rush (as it was then called, today it’s known as recruitment) and go through the house tour round and then drop out of rush. It sounded like a plan. I didn’t realize that I would end up feeling at home at one of the chapters. And that I would become a member.
In this blog I will share the history of GLOs and other topics. I wrote a dissertation on “Coeducation and the History of Women’s Fraternities 1867-1902.″ It chronicles the growth of the system and the birth of the National Panhellenic Conference.
My Master’s thesis details the history of the fraternity system at Southern Illinois University Carbondale from 1948-1960. The dates are significant ones and the thesis is available on the top menu.
I have done research at the Student Life Archives and have written several histories of University of Illinois fraternity chapters for the Society for the Preservation of Greek Housing.
Thanks for stopping by.

Moving on to March, the Farewell February Wrap-Up
February has been a long month. I’ve spent it with a 17 year-old-dog whose days are truly numbered. We love him; he’s been a terrific member of our family, and it is heartbreaking to see him go downhill. Worse than toilet … Continue reading
Friends For Life, For Fun, and For Support
Today’s post is about things I’ve seen posted on the internet in the last 24 hours. The first is from an almost year-old news story which appeared in the Lansing State Journal last February. A friend posted it to her … Continue reading
Thanksgiving Leftovers With a Dash of GLO Flavor
Travelling from Illinois to Connecticut via the interstate highway system offered me plentiful opportunities to ponder random thoughts. Whenever we are on the highway through metro New York and I see the sign for Yonkers, I want to take a … Continue reading
143 Years of Sisterhood! Happy Birthday, Kappa Kappa Gamma!
Happy Founders’ Day, Kappa Kappa Gamma. This past Wednesday, I visited Stewart House in Monmouth, Illinois, the former home of Kappa Founder, Mary Moore “Minnie” Stewart. It is always a treat to visit Stewart House. The home and gardens are … Continue reading
Holt House and Stewart House – THE Places to Visit in Monmouth, Illinois
I am in Monmouth, Illinois, for the Holt House Committee meeting. Holt House is the home in which Pi Beta Phi was founded on April 28, 1867. The Committee also visited Kappa Kappa Gamma’s Stewart House. The Monmouth Duo, Pi … Continue reading
“Look On This Picture After That!” The University of Kansas Fraternity System, 1889
Let’s go back 124 years. Pretend it’s 1889 and we’re at the University of Kansas. Forget that generations of students have come and gone in Lawrence since then. An early student publication devotes a page to what seems to be … Continue reading
E. Jean Nelson Penfield, KKG, and Carrie Chapman Catt, ΠΒΦ, the Monmouth Duo of Suffragists
Eliza Jean Nelson (Penfield), who was born and raised in Greencastle, Indiana, graduated from DePauw University in 1893. While a student, she became a member of the Iota chapter of Kappa Kappa Gamma. She attended the 1891 Panhellenic meeting in … Continue reading
A Kite, a Key, Some Arrows, and Two Alpha Phis, 1890 Panhellenic Spirit in D.C.
In the summer of 1890, a group of women who belonged to Pi Beta Phi’s two-year-old chapter at George Washington University spent the summer in D.C. “It has been our good fortune this summer to meet with members of other … Continue reading
“Unworthy of Womanly Dignity,” Recruitment Rules, University of Kansas, 1888
In 1870, only eight state universities were coeducational; the University of Kansas in Lawrence, Kansas, was one of the eight. Its women’s fraternity system dates to April 1, 1873, when the Kansas Alpha chapter of Pi Beta Phi** was chartered. … Continue reading
Bursting My Bubble – When a Kite Is Just a Kite
I feel a tad bit awful about my recent post refuting the current internet factoid on U.S. Presidents and fraternity membership. While the “all but two” statement is no longer true, the real statistic is nonetheless impressive. And for all … Continue reading
